PLACENCIA

The Placencia Peninsula is a little piece of heaven that was literally sliced off the coast of Belize and is located within the Stann Creek District of Southern Belize.

This idyllic peninsula curves off of Belize and creates a sandy break between the aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea and the calm salty waters of the Placencia Lagoon.

This once tiny fishing village was founded in the late 1800s by a group of families that earned their livelihood from the sea. The Spaniards actually named Placencia. Originally it was called “Punta Placentia” or “Pleasant Point”. After major damage was caused to the peninsula by Hurricane Iris, in 2001, many developers took advantage of plummeting real estate value and since then development on the peninsula has been steady and rising.

Today the tiny village is a colorful and thriving town, filled with amazing restaurants and art galleries. The “Main Street” is actually little more than a sidewalk and is in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the smallest main street in the world! Now popular tourism and retirement destination Placencia has attracted travelers from all over the world.

It’s easy to imagine living here. You could start your day sailing or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. Follow it up with a spa treatment at a resort and a simple but delicious meal at one of the many gourmet restaurants serving succulent local cuisine.
